Gather
Family Stories For Thanksgiving
A wonderful custom to cherish from year to year
The next time that you know you are going to have a large gathering of family members, do some planning ahead of time. Gather up a video camera and/or a tape recorder and plenty of blank tapes. Find a quiet corner where you can sit and visit with your relatives individually and ask for an oral history or interesting stories. Edit the tapes and share them with family the following year. This is a great annual tradition. |
If you don't have access to video or sound equipment, establish an annual family journal. Take time during the holidays to think back on the many holidays that you have shared in the past. Determine which family traditions belong uniquely to your family. Ask other family members to do the same and begin a shared journal of these memories. When the family gathers together, read the journal and share your family traditions with your children and grandchildren. If you don’t have an extended family to celebrate with, consider expressing thankfulness for your good fortune by helping others. Volunteer your time and energy for an organization serving a special Thanksgiving meal, such as the Salvation Army, a church or temple, a school or restaurant. |
