Halloween Activities: Make Worms!

Bat Line

You will need

1 box of flexible plastic straws (100 count)
A tall container such as a quart orange juice carton or a tall plastic pitcher
Waxed paper
1 (6 oz.) package raspberry or grape flavor Jello or other brand gelatin
3 envelopes unflavored gelatin
3 cups boiling water
2/3 cup whipping cream
12 to 15 drops green food coloring

Vintage Halloween Card

  1. Combine gelatins in a bowl and add boiling water; stir until gelatins completely dissolve. Chill until lukewarm, about 20 min.

  2. Extend straws to full length and place in tall container

  3. Blend cream and food coloring into the lukewarm gelatin mixture

  4. Pour mixture into the container of straws, making sure that each straw gets filled at least part of the way to the top

  5. Chill overnight

  6. When you are ready to serve the worms, pull the straws apart. You can run warm tap water over a clump of three or four at a time to loosen the worm. Beginning at the empty end of the straw, you can push the worms out with a rolling pin or your fingers.

  7.  Lay your worms on waxed paper lined baking sheets and return to refrigerator until ready to serve. Remember that they will keep their shape at room temperature for only about 2 hours.
