Prepare cake using two nine inch cake pans and cool thoroughly

Prepare the green Jello according to the package instructions (it works best if not gelled completely

Place one cake layer on a foil covered  cookie sheet

Cut a smaller circle out of the center of the layer. This will serve as the spiders head

Fill the hole left in the body completely with the soft green Jello

Place the second cake layer on top of the body

Prepare frosting by adding blue food coloring to the chocolate frosting until it has turned black

Frost entire cake, including head

Cut the licorice whips in half and insert them into the body for the eight legs

Position the gumballs for the eyes and refrigerate until ready to serve
