Never go into a home or apartment building without an adult.

Never get into a stranger's car

Trick or treat only in familiar areas and remain in groups of two or more people

Only trick or treat houses with outdoor lights on

Carry a flashlight

Walk on the sidewalk and cross only at corners

Walk, don't run!

Set a specific time for children to be home

Give children money to phone home if needed, and send a cellular phone with them if possible

Wear light colored costumes to be visible in the dark

Make sure costumes aren't too long (to avoid tripping over them in the dark)

Add reflectors to your costume

Make sure all costume accessories are safe and flexible

Use makeup or face paints if possible with your costume. Masks can obscure vision, and are often frightening for younger children to wear

Keep costumes away from pumpkins lit with candles

Make sure you check all candy and treats before eating anything. Many hospitals and police agencies offer free x-raying of your trick or treat bag on Halloween.
