Santa's Favorite Recipes: Toffee Bar Cookies

Pine Bar

Ingredients

1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 (14 oz) can of sweetened condensed milk
2 Tablespoons butter or margarine
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons vanilla

Fudge Frosting

1 oz square unsweetened chocolate
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
1 teaspoon vanilla

Christmas baskets

Cream butter, sugar, salt; stir in flour. 

Pat into ungreased 13x9x2" baking pan.

Bake in 350 degree oven until lightly browned; about fifteen minutes.

In heavy saucepan  stir condensed milk, 2 tablespoons butter and 1/4 tsp salt over low heat until butter melts. Cook and stir for five minutes over medium head. Mixture will thicken and become smooth. Stir in vanilla. 

Spread over baked layer. Bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes, until golden.

Spread warm cookies with Fudge Frosting; cut into bars and remove from pan.

Fudge Frosting

In small saucepan melt chocolate and butter over low heat, stirring constantly.

Remove from heat, stir in powdered sugar and vanilla. Blend in hot water (about 2 tablespoons to make frosting almost a pourable consistency.
