United States Postal Service Operation Santa Claus - Illinois
|
Individuals must present photo identification to receive letters. Third parties, such as charities, businesses, schools etc., wishing to adopt up to 100 letters, must now fill-out forms as well. In this instance, it is best to contact your local post office to make an appointment.
Individuals, corporations and civic groups are encouraged to contact their local post office for letters. You can obtain the phone number of your local post office by visiting www.usps.gov or call toll free 1-800-ASKUSPS (1-800-275-8777).
Days and times vary for program participation so customers should call their nearest Post Office for details.
The Chicago Letters to Santa program began in the late 1960s under the direction of Postmaster Henry W. McGee. He encouraged postal employees to “adopt” children and families in need. As word spread, the program was opened up to the public. Many large companies come in and pick up hundreds of letters to distribute among their employees.
OPERATION SANTA CLAUS 2012
On December 1, 2011 the US Postal Service will announce this season’s “Operation
Letters to Santa” program, which each year quietly makes available letters to
Santa written by underprivileged children. Volunteers from the public may pick
up letters asking Santa for “a warm coat”, “food or clothes” or “shoes for my
older brother,” clearly written by kids who need a brighter Christmas, and mail
their gifts to the family. Please check back soon!
