Operation Santa Claus was temporarily suspended on December 18, 2008 and will resume normal operations on Saturday, December 20.

Operation Santa Claus rules changed in 2006. Requests for Operation Santa Letters can no longer be accepted by telephone. Please contact your local post office for information on participation in this program.
To obtain the phone number of your local post office please visit www.usps.gov or call toll free 1-800-ASKUSPS (1-800-275-8777). When calling the toll free line follow the following tips and you should get the information you need right away.

When the first series of choices begins, immediately say "More Options"

When the next series begins, say "Post Office Information"

Then say, "Delivery Office"

When prompted, punch in your zip code
The Operation Santa Claus rules are as follows:

All "Dear Santa" letters are to be picked up at a post office in person. "Dear Santa" letters will no longer be sent out by mail and telephone requests are no longer accepted.

There is a limit of 6 letters per person, and 100 for third party. Third party means that companies and organizations will be able to get unlimited letters. This can be done by appointment only with your local post office if that facility has "Dear Santa" letters available.

Individuals wishing to answer up to 6 "Dear Santa" letters are not required to make an appointment. Please contact your local postmaster to see if Operation Santa Claus is available in your area at this time.

All “Dear Santa” helpers must agree with the USPS Privacy Act Statement listed on the PS Form 6012-1 (Operation Santa Letter Adoption Individual) and PS Form 6012 (Operation Santa Letter Adoption Third Party).

All “Dear Santa” helpers are required to show one piece of acceptable identification.
